Black History Month

Black History Month, also known as African American History Month, is an annual observance in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It originated in the United States, where it is celebrated every February.

The concept was pioneered by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, often hailed as the "Father of Black History." Dr. Woodson, along with the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, initiated the first Negro History Week in 1926. The chosen week coincided with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two individuals who had a significant impact on African American history.

Over time, the week evolved into a month-long celebration, officially becoming Black History Month in 1976. The expansion aimed to provide a more extensive opportunity to recognize the contributions of African Americans throughout history.

Each year, Black History Month is marked by events, educational programs, and the highlighting of African American achievements in various fields, including literature, science, politics, and the arts. The month serves as a time to reflect on the struggles and triumphs of the Black community, fostering a deeper understanding of the richness and diversity of Black history.
